Milk Control

The Board of Milk Control is administratively attached to the Department of Livestock, which provides staff to assist the Board of Milk Control in administering the Milk Control Act. The chart below shows the relationship between the Board of Milk Control and the Department of Livestock and differentiates between the department's two bureaus that regulate Montana's dairy industry.

The Montana Milk Control Program was established by the legislature in 1935 to strengthen and diversify Montana's dairy industry through activities promoting the intelligent production and orderly marketing of milk and cream. The Program carries out a variety of statutes and rules enacted by the legislature and the Board of Milk Control. Producers, distributors, and producer-distributors are assessed a fee to fund the Board of Milk Control and Milk Control Program activities.

The mission of the Milk Control Program is to regulate and control the transfer of milk among producers and distributors by enforcing Montana milk control laws and rules. Regulation of the milk market promotes public welfare and helps to maintain a stable market for milk within the State of Montana.
