Livestock Loss Reimbursement
The LLB reimburses losses when livestock are killed by wolf, grizzly bear, mountain lion, or black bear predation. Eligible livestock species include cattle, domestic bison, swine, horses, mules, sheep, goats, llamas, and livestock guard dogs.
How to Request Reimbursement:
- If a livestock owner suspects a livestock loss due to a large predator (wolf, grizzly bear, mountain lion, or black bear), they contact USDA-Wildlife Services to request an investigation: (406) 657-6464.
- If the livestock loss is found to be “confirmed” or “probable” by the investigator, it is eligible for a reimbursement claim. USDA-WS will send a copy of the investigation, a claim reimbursement form, and W-9 to the livestock owner.
- The livestock owner submits the completed reimbursement claim form, a copy of the investigation, a W-9, and any other relevant documents to the LLB.
Claim Processing:
- LLB staff determines the livestock value based on existing laws, policies, and procedures.
- Registered animals are valued at twice the fair market value. Copies of registration papers must be included with the reimbursement claim.
- Animals under contract may be eligible for reimbursement at the contracted price. Copies of the contract must be included with the reimbursement claim.
- Per-capita fee payments must be current (except for tribal members).
- Most claims are processed the day they are received; however, complex or atypical claims may require LLB review.
- Livestock owners will receive a letter explaining the valuation of livestock losses along with their payment. If applicable, lien holder names will be included on the check.
Appeals:
If a livestock owner disputes the value of the livestock, the owner must submit a letter to the LLB and provide proof of the valuation discrepancy. Appeals will be presented to the full board for review.
