The DEADLINE to Re-record your Montana Livestock Brand is December 31, 2021!!

 

Important Information:

!!!!     Your Montana Livestock Brand Re-record form or notice and payment ($175/brand) must be received and/or postmarked on or before December 31, 2021.

!!!!     Re-record forms and payments received with a postmark after December 31, 2021 will be returned to the sender.

 

What will happen if I do not re-record my brand during the Re-record year?

  • If your brand is not re-recorded by midnight on December 31, 2021, your brand will become inactive. Once a brand is inactive, you must re-apply for the brand as a new brand.  There is no guarantee a brand will be re-issued.
  • For the period of January 1, 2022 to March 31, 2022 re-application can only be made by the previous owner(s)* of the brand. No name changes can be made on re-application from January 1 to March 31, 2022.
    • *Previous owner(s) would be defined as the name, names, entity which owned the brand on December 31, 2021 at midnight.

Can I apply for a Montana Livestock Brand that was not re-recorded?

  • April 1, 2022 is the date in which the Dept of Livestock will begin accepting applications for Montana Livestock Brands that were not re-recorded.
  • A Montana Livestock Brand application must be completed, and the $200 application fee applies. For additional information and the application, please go to the “Livestock Brand” webpage.

 

To Re-record your Montana Livestock Brand on-line:

  • Click on the Dept. of Livestock "Bar 1 Bar" brand (above left), or use this START YOUR RE-RECORD HERE link.
  • You must have your Brand ID Number(s) and personal credit card to re-record your brand on-line.
  • The Brand ID Number is a 6-digit number and can be found in your Brand Re-record packet.
  • The 2021 Montana Livestock Brand Re-record fee is $175.00 per Brand.
  • Re-recording on-line is the fastest and most convenient option to re-record your brand, however there is a minimal transaction fee.  Please review the Fee Schedule below in the “Commonly Asked Questions” section.

To Re-record your Montana Livestock Brand by mail:

  • The 2021 Montana Livestock Brand Re-record fee is $175.00 per Brand.
  • If you have not received your Montana Livestock Brand Re-record packet, please CLICK HERE. Print the form and follow the instructions provided.
  • The Brand Re-record Hotline number is (406) 444-1278 or by email at brands@mt.gov. If you reach our voicemail message, please leave your name, phone number and a brief message. We will return your call in the order which it is received.

Additional Information:

  • MT Department of Livestock will be re-recording 55,576 Montana Livestock Brands during this one-year period.
  • Due to the high number volume of forms we are processing in conjunction with Brand Re-record, please do not call the Brand Office for confirmation. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this very busy time.
  • Please note: In an effort to limit close contact, the Brand Office is working to provide most services to the public remotely. What are the dates for the Montana Brand Re-record Year?
  • Re-record begins January 1, 2021 and ends at midnight on December 31, 2021.
What is the cost to re-record my brand?
  • The 2021 Montana Livestock Brand Re-record fee is $175 per brand.
How do I re-record my brand?
  • To successfully re-record your Montana Livestock Brand, choose one of the following options:
    • Use the following link to Re-record your Montana Livestock Brand on-line and to make payment using your personal credit card.
    • Return your brand re-record notice and the $175 per brand fee in the envelope provided to you in your Brand Re-record packet.
    • Drop your brand re-record notice and the $175 per brand fee in the lock box in the lobby of the Helena office.
Who do I make the check payable to?
  • Please make the check payable to “MT Dept of Livestock”.
Can I come to the Helena office to Re-record my brand?
  • Please note: In an effort to limit close contact, the Brand Office is working to provide most services to the public remotely, however, you may drop your brand re-record notice and the $175 per brand fee in the lock box in the lobby of the Helena office.
Can I re-record my brand early?
  • No. You will only be able to re-record your brand during the Re-record Year which begins January 1, 2021 and ends at midnight on December 31, 2021.
Can I transfer and re-record my brand for one fee?
  • No. The cost to transfer your brand and re-record your brand are two separate fees.
    • Re-record fee is $175.00
    • Brand transfer fee is $200.00
Where do I find the Assignment of Brand form which is required in order to transfer my brand?
  • The Assignment of Brand is located on the back side of your Official Brand Certificate.
If I register a new brand in 2021, will I have to re-record the brand as well?
  • No. If you register a new brand during the year 2021, you will not have to re-record that brand until 2031.
If I have a brand re-record question, how do I contact the Brand Office?
