Avian Chlamydiosis (Psittacosis) Treatment

Methods of treating the disease.

Antibiotics (specifically tetracyclines) are usually the treatment of choice for combating the organism C. psittaci.

Birds
In birds, the treatment with tetracyclines may occur for long periods. Contact a veterinarian regarding the proper treatment of birds.

Humans
In humans, tetracyclines are usually given for 10 to 14 days. Erythromycin or other antibiotic drugs may be used. Additional symptoms are treated as indicated. Long lasting immunity does not develop following a psittacosis infection.
