Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) Signs and Symptoms

A list of clinical signs the animal may or may not display.

Affected cattle may display changes in temperament, such as nervousness or aggression;

• Abnormal posture;
• Incoordination and difficulty in rising;
• Decreased milk production;
• Loss of body condition despite continued appetite;
• The incubation period ranges from 2 to 8 years;
• There is no treatment, and affected cattle die;
• Death generally occurs within 6 months of onset of the disease.
