Montana Import Requirements
Information about Montana's import requirements for various animals.
Six Month Horse Permit
Designed for the frequent equine travelers, this certificate, form SV-7HP, allows owners or trainers to travel continuously with a horse to participating states for an extended period of time. This certificate is good only for the following participating states; Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California and Nevada. Any travel to other states requires a standard 30-day CVI, form SV-7, and must meet that state’s import requirements. Not valid for travel into Canada or any other foreign countries.
This certificate is not to be used for transfer of ownership or for movement of mares and stallions only for breeding purposes.
This certificate is valid for six months from the date the blood is drawn for the EIA test. Requirements include that a horse have a lifetime brand inspection in order to obtain this certificate; inspection number and date inspection was issued must be listed on the certificate.
Tips on Completing the Six-Month Horse Passport

The licensed, accredited veterinarian examines the horse, completes and signs the form and submits the entire form to an approved lab with the blood sample. Mark each state into which the horse will travel. Obtaining permits from the states which require permits, Montana included.

When the lab returns the form with recorded EIA test results, the veterinarian calls the states of destination for permits, Montana requires a re-entry permit too. Phone numbers are listed at the top of the form under the respective states. Montana, Oregon and Washington require permits; California, Idaho and Nevada do not require permits at this time.

Distribute the appropriate copies of the form. Please remember to forward copies on to all states the owner intends to travel to.

Owner receives green copy, please go over their filling out the itinerary on the back and that they must send in copies to all states they have traveled to when the certificate expires or their travel has ended.
Montana has no reciprocity agreement for travel to and from any states that disallows EIA testing at this time. All travelers must meet the regular state of destination requirements and Montana requirements for the CVI, negative EIA within 12 months, and re-entry permit number.
