Montana Import Requirements

Information about Montana's import requirements for various animals.


Horses, Donkeys, Mules, and Zebras: All breeds.

Temporary Requirements

In response to the current disease status of certain portions of the United States, the MDOL is requiring that Certificates of Veterinary Inspections (CVIs) for livestock entering Montana also contain the following information:

Effective November 2009 all horses entering Montana from Texas must meet the Equine Piroplasmosis requirements outlined in the following document: [Piroplasmosis Memo]

Mandatory Requirements:

Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) with Permit Number – The veterinarian preparing the certificate should call the Department of Livestock at 406-444-2976 for import permit number.

Equine Infectious Anemia Test – All animals must have a negative coggins (EIA) test within 12 months of entry.

Brand Inspection - If area of origin does not have brand inspections one must be obtained upon arrival in MT. Contact the local Sheriff's office or Brands Enforcement Division of the Department of Livestock at 406-444-2045.

An Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA) Official Order placed May 18th, 2009 requires that for stallions imported into the state of Montana:

  1. For stallions that are known carriers (shedders) of EVA in semen, the State Veterinarian must be officially notified prior to importation
  2. For stallions testing positive on a serum diagnostic test for EVA with no certified proof of prior vaccination against the disease must fax a copy of the laboratory report confirming the absence of Equine Arteritis Virus in its semen to our office at (406) 444-2976.

Equine Semen Requirements:

Stallion must be:

      • Officially tested negative for EIA within 12 months of importation.
      • Officially tested negative (serum neutralization) for equine viral arteritis (EVA) within 30 days prior to importation OR be serologically negative within 10 days prior to being vaccinated with proof of vaccination by a licensed veterinarian. Importation cannot occur for at least 28 days following vaccination.
      • Sero-positive stallions without negative test prior to vaccination must have proof of being a non-shedder for equine viral arteritis AND the results of these tests and proof of vaccination must be faxed to the Montana State Veterinarian's office at the time the import permit is given.

A Health Certificate (CVI) and permit number must accompany the shipment. Test results must be faxed to our office at (406) 444-1929 prior to the semen shipment.
