Information about Montana's import requirements for various animals.


Domestic Goats:

Domestic Breeding Goats (Capra aegagrus) for dairy, meat, hair & pets:

Mandatory General Requirements
Mandatory Specific Tests
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Test:
    1. Animals originating from, and residing in for 60 days or more, TB Accredited Free U.S. States or zones:
      1. TB test (negative) required within 60 days prior to importation into Montana for all dairy breeds of goats of all ages; or
      2. TB test not required if dairy goats originate directly from a USDA-APHIS-VS Accredited TB-Free herd. The herd accreditation number and date of entire herd test must be included on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection.
      3. TB test not required on dairy goats less than six (6) months of age if accompanied by TB test-negative dams.
    2. Animals originating from, and residing in for 60 days or more, TB Modified Accredited Advanced U.S. States or zones: Texas, New Mexico, and Modified Accredited Advanced zone of Michigan:
      1. TB test (negative) required within 60 days prior to importation into Montana for all non-dairy goats two (2) month of age and older.
      2. TB test not required on goats less than six (6) months of age if accompanied by TB test-negative dams.
      3. Dairy breeds requirements same as originating from TB Accredited Free U.S. States or Zones.
    3. Animals originating from, and residing in for 60 days or more, TB Modified Accredited U.S. State or zones or States/zones or Providences with TB documented wildlife: Manitoba and Modified Accredited zone of Michigan, including: Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Montmorency, Oscoda, Ostego, and Presque Isle counties, and those portions of Iosco and Ogemaw counties that are north of the southernmost boundaries of the Huron National Forest and the Ausable State Forest:
      1. TB test (negative) required (all ages of animals) within 60 days prior to importation into Montana and must originate directly from a herd that has been TB tested in its entirety within the last 12 months; or
      2. TB test (negative) required (all ages of animals) within 60 days prior to importation into Montana and must originate directly from a USDA-APHIS-VS Accredited TB-Free herd (or Canadian equivalent). The herd accreditation number and date of entire herd test must be included on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection; or
      3. Two TB tests (negative) (all ages of animals) 60-120 days apart . The second TB test must be within 60 days prior to importation into Montana.
  • Brucellosis Test:
    • All sexually intact animals 6 months of age and over, one negative Brucella Abortus Test within 30 days of entry.
  • Scrapie statements must be included on the CVI:
    • The following statement by the veterinarian must be included on the CVI: “The animal(s) in this shipment were not exhibiting clinical signs associated with scrapie at the time of the examination.”
    • The following statement by the owner (shipper) must be included on the CVI: “The animal(s) in this shipment is (are) not a scrapie-positive, suspect, high risk, or exposed animal(s) and did not originate from a scrapie-infected, source, exposed, or noncompliant flock.”
Prohibited Species
  • Some exotic breeds are prohibited.
