Montana Import Requirements

Information about Montana's import requirements for various animals.


Alternative Livestock - Sheep and Goats:

Bighorn Sheep and Desert Sheep (Ovis canadensis),
Dall Sheep (Ovis dalli),
Rocky Mountain Goats (Oreamnos americanus)

Mandatory General Requirements
Mandatory Specific Tests
  • Tuberculosis (TB) test:
    • Individual Animals must have a negative TB test within 60 days of entry AND must originate directly from a herd that has been tested negative in its entirety within the last 12 months or previous (365 days) using either the Caudal Fold or Single Cervical tests OR 2 negative TB tests 60 days apart. Individual test dates and individual IDs are required.
  • Brucellosis - Rocky Mountain Goats
    • All sexes, 6 months and over, must have a negative 30 day Brucella Abortus test, even class free origin.
    • Two of the following negative tests: BAPA, Rivanol, or FPA.
  • Brucellosis - Sheep
    • All Rams must have a current 30 day negative ELISA test for BrucellaOvis.
  • Brucellosis - Retest quarantine at destination
    • On all animals, there is a 30 to 120 day retest for Brucellosis Abortus (Goats) and Brucella Ovis (Rams).
  • No tests required on nursing young with their mothers.
  • Scrapie statements must be included on the CVI:
    • The following statement by the veterinarian must be included on the CVI: “The animal(s) in this shipment were not exhibiting clinical signs associated with scrapie at the time of the examination.”
    • The following statement by the owner (shipper) must be included on the CVI: “The animal(s) in this shipment is (are) not a scrapie-positive, suspect, high risk, or exposed animal(s) and did not originate from a scrapie-infected, source, exposed, or noncompliant flock.”
    • Animals moving between AZA accredited zoos are exempt from the preceding scrapie statements.

  • Barbary or Aoudad Sheep
  • Mouflon Sheep
  • Goats - All prohibited except domestic (Caprahircus) (O.Americanus)
