Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) Diagnosis

Information about how the disease is diagnosed.

Clinical diagnosis can be confirmed by a Coggins test, which is a simple and highly accurate serological test to detect infection.

EIA should be suspected if a horse has a history of weight loss accompanied by periodic fever, or if several horses in a group develop similar signs following introduction of new animals into a herd. If a horse exhibits signs of EIA or dies of unknown causes, a veterinarian should be consulted to determine the cause of the illness or death.
