Testing Requirements

Currently there are no additional testing requirements on intrastate (in state) movement of cattle.

States that have issued specific import requirements in response to the Montana brucellosis case are be listed below. If your state of destination is not listed, please see the State Veterinarian Contact Information page for import information.

Non-exposed, non-quarantined cattle:

Bulls under 18 months of age*

Cattle for immediate slaughter

None

None if being moved to recognized slaughter establishments or to specifically approved stockyards or State-approved to be sold for immediate slaughter if the identity of the nonquarantined herd is maintained.

Test-eligible** breeding cattle

Voluntary test recommended 45-120 days after movement

Must have a negative test within 30 days of shipment from farm of origin to farm of destination.

Rodeo Bulls

None

None if:

  • Bulls have been subjected to an official negative test within the previous 12 months, and
  • Each bull is individually identified, and
  • There is no change of ownership, and
  • Proper health certificates accompany each movement, and
  • State officials were notified in advance of all movements.

*as evidenced by the presence of the first pair of temporary incisor teeth.
**Sexually intact animals over 18 months of age.
