Certificate Requirements


Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI)

  1. Required for companion animals:
    1. Less than 3 months of age
    2. For breeding
    3. For change of ownership (includes pet store and shelter animals)

  3. International companion animals must meet the same import requirements as domestic animals. International travelers should also visit the CDC website for international import requirements. The website is http://www.cdc.gov/animalimportation/BringingAnimalToUs.html

Permit Requirements


Import Permit

  1. Required for companion animals:
    1. For breeding
    2. For change of ownership (includes pet store and shelter animals)
    3. Originating from a rabies quarantine area
    4. Originating from a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) area

Vaccination Requirements


Rabies

Proof of current vaccination required for all age-eligible animals.

  1. Domestic companion animals traveling with their owners and originating from a non-rabies quarantine area are required to travel with a current rabies vaccination certificate ONLY
  2. Domestic companion animals from a rabies quarantine area are required to call MDOL at (406) 444-2976 for veterinary permission prior to importation into Montana.

Miscellaneous Requirements


  1. International companion animals originating from a non-FMD area are required to meet the import requirements for domestic companion animals.
  2. International companion animals originating from a confirmed FMD case country must first contact MDOL at (406)444-2043 to convey exposure potential and site location of origin. These shipments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Companion animal imports deemed by a veterinarian as low risk and eligible for importation as outlined in the FMD Prevention & Response Protocol, III., must meet the following requirements prior to importation:
    1. Animal(s) must be held in quarantine for seven days prior to importation
    2. Animal(s) must be bathed with a one-to-one vinegar and water solution immediately prior to the quarantine period and immediately prior to importation.
    3. Animal(s) must be quarantined to the premises of destination for a minimum of ten days with no cloven-hoofed animal contact for the quarantine period and bathed with a one-to-one vinegar and water solution immediately upon entry of the premises and again prior to quarantine release in Montana.
    4. The quarantines must be overseen by a designated veterinarian in both the country of origin and at destination in Montana.
