Vaccination Requirements


  1. ANIMALS FROM STATES THAT HAVE NOT BEEN BRUCELLOSIS CLASS FREE FOR TEN OR MORE YEARS (IDAHO, WYOMING, & TEXAS)
    1. Cows (>12 months of age) -
      1. Official Calfhood Vaccinate (OCV), OR
      2. Official Adult Vaccinate
        1. Animals that are being adult vaccinated to meet Montana's entry requirements must have a negative brucellosis test within 30 days prior to entry.
        2. Mature vaccinates (M vaccinates) approved by other states are not recognized as official adult vaccinates by Montana but may be eligible for importation by becoming official adult vaccinates.
    2. Heifers
      1. Less than 4 months of age, with dams
        1. OCV not required
      2. Less than 4 months of age, without dams
        1. Quarantine for vaccination or spay (within 6 months)  
          1. Brucellosis vaccination quarantines must be requested in advance by the Montana producer or the veterinarian who will fulfill the requirements of the quarantine.  
      3. 4 to 12 months of age
        1. OCV
          1. Brucellosis vaccination quarantines must be requested in advance by the Montana producer or the veterinarian who will fulfill the requirements of the quarantine.
      4. Spayed heifers greater than 1 month of age
        1. OCV not required
  2. ANIMALS FROM STATES, AREAS, PROVINCES OR TERRITORIES THAT HAVE BEEN BRUCELLOSIS CLASS FREE FOR TEN OR MORE YEARS
    1. Brucellosis vaccination is not required.
    2. PLEASE NOTE: Montana has in-state vaccination requirements for Beaverhead, Gallatin, Madison and Park counties per ARM 32.3.436.

Testing Requirements


Brucellosis – Negative test required on all animals within 30 days prior to entry except on nursing young with test negative dams or neutered animals.

Tuberculosis (TB)

  1. No TB test from accredited tuberculosis free state or animals less than 6 months with negative dam.
  2. Animals originating from a TB Modified Accredited Advanced State or areas:
    1. Sexually intact animals 2 months of age and older
      1. One negative TB test within 60 days prior to importation, OR
      2. Originate from USDA-APHIS-VS Accredited TB-Free herd, OR
      3. Originate from a herd which has a negative whole herd test within 6 months prior to importation and the individual animals in the shipment were included in the whole herd test.
  3. Tuberculosis Modified Accredited States or areas:
    1. Sexually intact animals 2 months of age and older :
      1. Two negative TB tests 60-120 days apart and the second test  within 60 days prior to importation; OR
      2. One negative TB test within 60 days prior to importation and must originate directly from a herd that has a negative whole herd test within 12 months of movement and the individual animals in the shipment were included in that whole herd test; OR
      3. One negative TB test within 60 days prior to importation and must originate directly from a USDA-APHIS-VS Accredited TB-Free herd (or Canadian equivalent). The herd accreditation number and date of whole herd test must be included on the CVI and the individual animals being shipped were included in that whole herd test

Identification Requirements


Official individual identification (USDA eartag, registration tattoo, or microchip) is required and must be listed on the CVI.
