Bison Import Requirements


Health Certificate Requirements

Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI)

  1. A certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) and import permit number must accompany all bison entering Montana except:
    1. Animals moving direct from farm of origin to a federally approved livestock market.
    2. Animals moving direct to a federally approved slaughter facility if moving with an owner shipper statement (OSS).
  2. If required, official individual ID must be listed on the CVI

EXCEPTION: Bison arriving from Farm of Origin to Specifically Approved Stockyard per CFR 9 Part 78.9(a)(3)(i) are qualified on arrival. CVI and permit not required.


Identification Requirements

  1. Identification Requirements:
    1. Official individual identification (ID) is required for all bison except animals moving directly to a Montana approved tagging site. Additional exemptions (not applicable to exhibition animals or those with test or quarantine requirements) are:
      1. Calves less than six months with dams.
  2. Approved forms of official individual ID:
    1. USDA silver ID tags.
    2. USDA orange brucellosis vaccination tags.
    3. Other USDA approved tags such as RFID tags.

Brucellosis Vaccination Requirements

Cows (>12 months of age) -

  1. Official Calfhood Vaccinate (OCV)
    1. Bison must be officially calfhood vaccinated prior to entry into Montana. Official adult vaccinate bison are not eligible for importation into Montana, per ARM 32.3.224.

Heifers

  1. Less than 4 months of age, with dams
    1. OCV not required
  2. Less than 4 months of age, without dams
    1. Quarantine for vaccination or spay (within 6 months)  
      1. Brucellosis vaccination quarantines must be requested in advance by the Montana producer or the veterinarian who will fulfill the requirements of the quarantine.  
  3. 4 to 12 months of age
    1. OCV
      1. Brucellosis vaccination quarantines must be requested in advance by the Montana producer or the veterinarian who will fulfill the requirements of the quarantine.
  4. Spayed heifers greater than 1 month of age
       a. Veterinarian's statement on the CVI noting that "Heifers are spayed"

    Testing Requirements

    1. Brucellosis
    1. Sexually intact bison 12 months of age and older must have a negative brucellosis test within 30 days prior to importation.
      1. Exception: US origin sexually intact virgin female bison 12-24 months of age.
    2. Tuberculosis (TB)
    1. Bison originating from a TB Accredited Free State or Zone:
      1. No testing required 
      2. Rodeo or roping bovines 2 months of age and older
        1. One negative TB test within 6 months prior to importation
    2. Bison originating from a TB Modified Accredited Advanced State or areas:
      1. Sexually intact bison 18 months of age and older, rodeo and roping bovines 2 months of age and older 
        1. One negative TB test within 60 days prior to importation, OR
        2. Originate from USDA-APHIS-VS Accredited TB-Free herd, OR
        3. Originate from a herd which has a negative whole herd test within 6 months prior to importation and the individual animals in the shipment were included in the whole herd test.
    3. Tuberculosis Modified Accredited States or areas:
      1. Bison 2 months of age and older
        1. Two negative TB tests 60-120 days apart and the second test within 60 days prior to importation; OR
        2. One negative TB test within 60 days prior to importation and must originate directly from a herd that has a negative whole herd test within 12 months of movement and the individual animals in the shipment were included in that whole herd test; OR
        3. One negative TB test within 60 days prior to importation and must originate directly from a USDA-APHIS-VS Accredited TB-Free herd (or Canadian equivalent). The herd accreditation number and date of whole herd test must be included on the CVI and the individual animals being shipped were included in that whole herd test; OR
    4. Canadian origin bison
      1. Sexually intact bison 2 months of age and older, all rodeo and roping bison 2 months of age and older 
        1. One negative TB test within 60 days prior to import.  

    Miscellaneous Requirements

    1. Bison calves without dams, 1 month or less of age
      1. 30 day hold disease quarantine per ARM 32.3.212
      2. Veterinarian’s statement on the CVI “Calf(calves) must be held on premises of destination and may not be resold for 30 days."
      3. Must have official ear tag listed on CVI and permit.
